Grande Réserve 2007: 1 star

This listed 16th-century château has been home to the Le Grix de la Salle family for over two hundred years. Four generations work together to produce wines that are regularly selected in the guide. This Grande Réserve again confirms the estate’s expertise.

With its elegant purple colour, this wine has a warm bouquet of dried fruit, roasted coffee and liquorice. The palate is generous and rich, structured with tannins but not overbearingly so, a sign of a good maturing process.

Best in two to three years.

Grande Réserve 2005, 2004 and 2003 – our special favourites

16th-century fortified country residence. 85 ha estate (gravelly soil with chalky-clay slopes, 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet-Sauvignon, matured in casks with 75% new wood, stirred on fine lees for 14-16 months).

The Bordeaux Supérieur Grande Réserve 2005 is a special favourite. It is plump with a well-defined nose of blackberry and undergrowth, strong yet supple, with harmonious tannins, full and dense. The 2004 vintage is strong and lush, with tannins that are both distinctive and melded, an excellent well-balanced, classical vintage for laying down. The 2003 vintage, with its intense colour, is plump, complex, dominated by ripe red berries and undergrowth, rich on the nose and palate.

Not to be missed.
